Rani Mukerji got trolled for her opinions on the #MeToo movement, as she said that women need to learn self-defence.

The #MeToo movement raged across India in October and sexual harassers from different fields. Much to everyone’s surprise, Bollywood was not spared. Many celebrities like Rajat Kapoor, Vikas Bahl, Nana Patekar and Sajid Khan came under fire for inappropriate behaviour with women, and were asked to step away from their films.

Recently, during a recent interview, prominent actresses like Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt, Tabu, Rani Mukerji and Taapsee Pannu expressed their opinions on the movement. While Deepika, Alia, Anushka and Taapsee were on the same page, Rani had different ideas. “You have to have the courage to protect yourselves,” she said. Deepika cut in said, “There are women who are not constructed like that. They feel cornered.”

Rani replied, “Those are the women we need to talk to, and tell them that they need to change themselves.” Anushka pointed out that it is bringing the responsibility back to women, rather than men changing. Rani added that self-defence was necessary and that learning martial arts should become part of a school schedule. She said it was important for girls to learn how to protect themselves.

Deepika asked, “Why even bring it to a point where girls should learn self-defence?”

Rani’s views have been torn apart on the internet. Here are some of the reactions.
